ICD-10-CM Medical Coding
On this page
Purpose
ICD-10-CM Medical Coding gives your Agent the full ICD-10-CM diagnosis code set, one of the most widely used in healthcare. It is the standard for US claims, and health systems in other countries use it too. Connect it to an Agent, and the Agent can suggest diagnosis codes for a clinical note and check each one against the official list before it answers.
It helps a reviewer find candidate codes. It does not make a diagnosis, choose the final code, or check billing rules.
When to use it
- Suggest ICD-10-CM codes for the diagnoses in a clinical note or visit summary.
- Check that a code exists and see its current title, for example
E11.9. - List the more specific codes in a category, for example every code under
I21for an acute heart attack.
Use ICD-11 Medical Coding instead when you need ICD-11 codes. This component does not look up procedure codes.
Required setup
None. ICD-10-CM Medical Coding needs no account, connection, or API key.
How to use it
In Tool Mode:
- Connect the component tool to Agent Core.
- Give the Agent the note or the diagnoses you want coded.
- The Agent works out the likely code for each diagnosis, looks up the codes in its category, and picks the one whose title best matches the note.
- Have a coder or clinician review the suggested codes.
For example, for a note that says "HTN, T2DM with CKD stage 3, NSTEMI last year", the Agent can suggest I12.9, E11.22, N18.30, and I25.2 for review.
The Agent searches with codes and official diagnosis terms, not the note itself. Lookups go to the US National Library of Medicine, so keep patient names and other identifiers out of what you ask the Agent to look up. The component works without any privacy components. If your flow must keep patient identifiers away from the model, you can add Deidentifier before the Agent and Pseudonym Resolver after it.
In Normal mode, enter a code, a category such as I21, or official diagnosis wording in Query, then read the matches from the Message output. Everyday terms and abbreviations such as "heart attack" or "HTN" return no matches, because the search looks for the words in official code titles.
Configuration
| Setting | What it controls | Recommended starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Query | The code or diagnosis term to find | Use a code, a category, or official diagnosis wording |
| Top Results | How many codes come back | Keep 10 so a category shows its codes; the range is 1 to 10 |
Expected result
The Message output lists the matching codes with their titles and the total number of matches. An Agent gets the same list. A search with no match returns an empty list.
Treat every code as a candidate for a coder or clinician to confirm.
Reference details
The lookup uses the current ICD-10-CM code set. It does not return codes from earlier years for older dates of service.
ICD-10-CM covers most diagnosis coding work. If your organization codes with a different version of ICD-10 or another code set, email hello@arkus.ai with a feature request.
Chat Input can provide a Normal-mode query, and Chat Output can display the result.
